Where to Stay in Brewster, Cape Cod: A Guide to Old King's Highway

Route 6A winds thirty-four miles along the north side of Cape Cod — through salt marshes, cranberry bogs, sea-captain's houses and village greens — and Yankee Magazine once called it "iconic and timeless." National Geographic put it on its list of the World's Most Scenic Drives. The US Department of Transportation made it a National Scenic Byway in 2021.

Somewhere along that stretch, in the village of Brewster, sits a one-acre property with an 1890 farmhouse, three tiny cottages, and a small studio originally built by a welder for his wife. We call it Salty Doors. This is why we chose Brewster — and what we think you should do when you visit.

Why Brewster

Cape Cod has fifteen towns. They all have sand, and most of them have lobster rolls. Brewster is the one with eleven beaches inside a single town line, a 1,900-acre state park, and the quietest stretch of Old King's Highway.

What makes Brewster different: the beaches face north, into Cape Cod Bay. At low tide, the water pulls back as far as a mile, and the flats turn into a walking map of tidepools and seashells. It's the opposite experience from the crashing-waves Atlantic side. Kids can walk for a half hour without the water rising above their knees.

Brewster is also where the Cape slows down. There are no strip malls on 6A. Houses have kept their 1800s clapboard. You can drive fifteen minutes between grocery stores. It's the Cape Cod you remember from childhood — or the one you imagined before you ever visited.

What to do when you get there

  • Paine's Creek Beach — five minutes from Salty Doors. Sunset here is the thing people come to Brewster for.

  • Nickerson State Park — 1,900 acres, four kettle ponds, the Cape Cod Rail Trail running straight through it. Bring a kayak.

  • Cape Cod Museum of Natural History — a walking trail through salt marshes to a private beach. Quietly one of the best family afternoons on the Cape.

  • Drummer Boy Park — a working windmill, acres of lawn, and a playground. Summer Thursdays have free concerts.

  • Kate's Seafood — no frills, best lobster roll on this stretch of 6A. We send every guest there.

  • The Cape Cod Rail Trail — 25 miles of former railroad line, paved for bikes. It runs right past Brewster.

All of these are within a ten-minute drive of our Salty Doors compound. Most are walkable in summer.

Where to stay on Old King's Highway

There's a hotel or two on 6A, but most people who choose Brewster want privacy — a yard, a kitchen, a firepit, a dog at their feet. We built Salty Doors for that.

It's five freestanding buildings on one acre, set back behind a hedge off 6A. You can book them individually or rent the whole compound.

The Captain's House

An 1890 Brewster farmhouse, fully restored. 2,000 square feet, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, sleeps eight. Two king suites, an original gas fireplace, a 500-square-foot private patio with a propane firepit. Best for two families traveling together or a multi-gen trip. Three 1-bedroom cottages

Each is 320 square feet, sleeps two, with a gas fireplace, full kitchen, screened porch, and private patio with a firepit. Three color palettes, three moods.

Pinch of Salt Studio

The oldest dwelling on the property — a 300-square-foot studio built in 1890 by a Brewster welder for his young wife. Queen bed, kitchenette, private patio and outdoor shower. Our most romantic and most historic unit. View Pinch of Salt →

Or book the entire compound

For weddings, reunions, and milestone weekends, we rent the whole acre together. Sleeps up to sixteen (fourteen adults) across five buildings, with event allowance for up to fifty guests. Entire Salty Doors compound →

Practical notes

  • Best time to visit: May through October. Summer is peak; September is our favorite — warm water, empty beaches.

  • Getting here: Boston Logan is 90 minutes; Providence is 80; Hyannis Transportation Center is 25 minutes with shuttle or ride-share to Brewster.

  • Pets: All of our Brewster units are pet-friendly ($30/night per pet). Nickerson has miles of dog-friendly trails.

  • Parking: Each unit has a dedicated spot on the property. No street parking needed.
